Project Title: The History of the Travel and Transfer of Indian Art Objects to America in the 19th and 20th century
Abstract of Project :
I will explore the history of the travel and transfer of Indian art objects to America by juxtaposing the Peabody collection of clay figures to that of the objects displayed at the first folk art exhibition in Philadelphia in 1968. My objective is to map the altering vision of Indian art in the West, in the nineteenth and twentieth century, with a focus on the key figure of art historian Stella Kramrisch.
